Work Experience
Learn more about my journey from electrical engineer to technical project management, web development and entrepreneurship
Electrical Engineer
My career started as an electrical engineer in the aerospace and defense industry with L3 Harris Technologies. Initially my role involved mixed signal (analog and digital) hardware design including electrical schematic design and FPGA code design.
Project Engineer
After a few years I moved in to a project engineer role. At my division project engineers were the technical project lead from concept/proposal to production. The role was a mix of systems engineering and technical project management. My responsibilities included working closely with customers to refine concepts and develop proposals, create and maintain requirements, generate the project schedule and budget for the development portion of the project, setting the technical direction, overseeing design reviews and preparing and presenting project status to upper management. Projects would range in budget from $200K to over $20MM.
Hardware Engineering Manager
After about 10 years with L3 I was promoted to a Hardware Engineering Manager position. In this role I led a team of 8 electrical and project engineers in addition to my own project engineering responsibilities. New responsibilities included resource and staff planning, process and continuous improvement initiatives and more involvement with our customers and business development group on proposals and new business initiatives.
Web Development
In parallel with my corporate engineering work I was supporting our own business, Modern Direct Seller, with website development, tech and operations. In July 2020, I decided to leave my position at L3 and go full time in Modern Direct Seller with my wife, Becky.
My web development journey started with our own website moderndirectseller.com which is built on the WordPress content management system (CMS) and includes e-Commerce, membership and learning management system (LMS) functionality.
From there I’ve gone on to develop a Website as a Service (WaaS) product, Oh My, Hi!, and many other client projects.
I primarily work with WordPress and have extensive experience with the WooCommerce, LifterLMS, Gravity Forms, AffiliateWP and Advanced Custom Fields plugins. I’ve done a lot of work with page builders including Divi, Elementor, Oxygen and Bricks. I’ve also created a number of custom WordPress plugins and themes and done some integrations with Shopify.
Co-Founder & COO
In addition to my web development and technical role I also lead operations and finance for our Modern Direct Seller business. This role includes project planning, process development, financial reporting and projections. I work closely with my wife, Becky, who leads sales and marketing.
